Two Lane County projects make Oregon's $10 million culture list
A Walterville discovery center is recommended for $2 million and Eugene's Victorian house museum for $400,000—but lawmakers still hold the checkbook.
Two Lane County projects have made a statewide list of 11 cultural construction proposals recommended for the 2027-29 budget. The Cultural Advocacy Coalition of Oregon endorsed $2 million for the McKenzie River Discovery Center near Walterville and $400,000 for the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House's long-planned garden terrace in Eugene.
The McKenzie center is designed as an educational destination about the river's geology, ecology and cultural history. The garden terrace would give the 1888 Victorian house museum more accessible space for larger events. Both projects have been in motion for years.
The important word is recommended. The coalition advocates for Cultural Resources Economic Funds, but the Oregon Legislature decides what enters the final budget. Lane County has $2.4 million on the list, not in the bank.
