Springfield Station restrooms are coming back, one stall at a time
LTD is converting two small rooms for customer use after six weeks with no public restroom at the downtown transit hub.
During the first 10 business days of July, buses recorded 16,375 arrivals and departures at Springfield Station. Every one of those trips passed through a station whose public restrooms had been closed since June 29.
An Aug. 7 staff memo reviewed by Lookout Eugene-Springfield says operators are moving into the station's larger former public restrooms while two single-user rooms near customer service are modified for riders. LTD confirmed the smaller rooms will be available to transit customers when the work is finished, but it has not given a completion date.
The closure grew out of a collision between federal rules for sex-separated spaces and Oregon anti-discrimination law. Downtown Eugene Station already uses gender-neutral, single-user stalls — a less dramatic arrangement that also happens to let people use the bathroom.
