Oakshire is closing after 20 years, but the last Eugene date is still open
Springfield served its final customers Sunday, Portland closes Wednesday, and the Eugene Public House still plans an October 3 anniversary while it works out its last day.
Oakshire Brewing is closing its production brewery and all three taprooms after a 20-year run that began in Eugene. The sequence is uneven: Oakshire Commons in downtown Springfield served its last customers Sunday, September 27; the Portland Beer Hall is scheduled to close after service Wednesday, September 30; and the Eugene Public House has not set a final date.
The company says rising costs, a more competitive brewery market, the financial damage left by the pandemic and changes in how people gather made the business unsustainable as a whole. Brewers will keep packaging beer already in production. Oakshire's previously scheduled 20th-anniversary celebration is still planned for Saturday, October 3, at the Eugene Public House, now also serving as a farewell.
Founder and CEO Jeff Althouse told Lookout Eugene-Springfield that Oakshire would welcome a buyer who could keep the brewery or brand operating. The northwest Eugene brewery building and its equipment are being offered together; the Portland building is also for sale. That leaves a narrow possibility of continuation, but no buyer or rescue plan has been announced.
Field notes
What changed: Oakshire announced that it will close its production brewery and taprooms in Springfield, Portland and Eugene, ending the company in its current form after 20 years.
Why it matters: The shutdown removes three gathering places, affects brewery and taproom workers, and closes a locally founded brand with a regional footprint.
Who may be affected: Oakshire employees, food-cart partners, customers, downtown Springfield and Whiteaker regulars, and prospective buyers of the brewery or brand.
