UO proposes graduate-program closures, opens public review
History, Folklore and other graduate programs face closure under a budget plan now open for feedback.
Graduate study in History, Folklore and Comparative Literature is among the programs UO proposes ending as it works to reduce its budget deficit. A plan presented to the University Senate on October 28 calls for $17.6 million in administrative-services reductions and $25.8 million from schools and colleges, KLCC reports.
These are proposals, not approved closures; UO says final decisions are expected in early December. The university’s program list also considers consolidating the College of Design and School of Music and Dance, alongside reductions in graduate-employee support.
KLCC reports that students already enrolled would be able to finish their studies, while recruitment for next fall would end in programs being closed. Faculty raised concerns at the Senate meeting about the consequences for humanities and research.
UO’s proposal overview links to the Academic Modifications Advisory Committee’s feedback form. Public listening-session dates were still to be announced on that page.
