About this event
The League of Women Voters of Lane County has a great election-focused two-fer planned for its monthly luncheon on Oct. 27. Tommy Gong, Lane County’s elections clerk, will give a behind-the-scenes talk about the processes and challenges of counting votes on Election Day. Before he speaks, the League will pay tribute to one of Oregon’s preeminent suffragists, Abigail Scott Duniway. Duniway was instrumental in helping Oregon become the seventh state to pass a women’s suffrage amendment in 1912. When the measure passed, Oregon’s governor invited Duniway to write and sign the equal suffrage proclamation. She was the first woman to register to vote in Multnomah County. Duniway was remarkable for other reasons, too. She owned a newspaper in Oregon that promoted many rights for women, including the right to own and control property, another bill she championed that passed in Oregon. She was no prude, rejecting prohibition as an impossible goal and promoting instead the heavy taxation of alcohol. Be prepared for a reenactment by League member Mary Sue Backus, who’ll offer a barnburner of a speech using Duniway’s own words. The event is free and open to the public with advance registration encouraged. For those who want lunch, food can be pre-ordered at an on-site café.
