Apply for federal 501(c)(3) recognition for a nonprofit

Apply for IRS recognition of 501(c)(3) status using Form 1023 or, if eligible, Form 1023-EZ.

  1. Choose the appropriate formAll applicants can use Form 1023. Certain small organizations can use Form 1023-EZ after checking its Eligibility Worksheet.
  2. Submit through Pay.govComplete and submit the application and required user fee on Pay.gov; search there for Form 1023 or Form 1023-EZ.
