A Eugene cafe built its mocha around an Ibarra chocolate bar
One year into Xocolate Coffee Co., the menu folds Mexican and Guatemalan family roots into coffee, chilaquiles, housemade chorizo and one tiny Lego cafe.
Xocolate Coffee Co.'s signature mocha starts with an Ibarra chocolate bar melted with cinnamon sticks, water and a little more sugar. The Eugene cafe's name starts there too: xocolatl, the Mesoamerican word often translated as bitter water.
A fresh Lookout profile follows owners Analley Sanchez and Jeshua Castellanos through their first year at the cafe west of Garfield Avenue. Sanchez built a menu around Mexican and Guatemalan family roots—chilaquiles, housemade turkey chorizo, conchas dipped in hot chocolate—while buying beans and bread from other Eugene producers.
The room is designed for staying, with ceramic mugs, a couch, Mexican folk art and a Lego cafe perched above the pastry case. Xocolate is at 995 Tyinn St., Suite 1, and the reported hours are 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Saturday. Check the business directly before making a special trip.
