Reality Kitchen's next batch is a River Road general store
The inclusive Eugene bakery now runs a cafe and reopened food cart while training workers with and without disabilities.
Reality Kitchen's old bread oven is painted like a dragon and answers to Ginger. The less decorative machinery around it supports a wholesale bakery, a three-day cafe, a recently reopened food cart and, in the next several months, a planned River Road general store.
The nonprofit's real product is paid, inclusive work. Its 16-week training program teaches commercial-kitchen and barista skills to people with and without disabilities, then helps participants move into local jobs or stay with the bakery. Staff say the workplace is designed around individual strengths rather than a single eight-hour-shift mold.
That model matters in a county where Lookout reports that only about 47% of residents ages 20 to 64 with a disability were working in 2022. It also produces caramel brownies, pretzel-dough pain au chocolat and a food cart with ambitions involving giant stuffed tater tots. A civic institution is allowed to be delicious.
Field notes
What changed: Reality Kitchen reopened its Reality Bites food cart in August and plans to add a general store in the same River Road building.
Why it matters: The expansion gives the nonprofit more ways to fund and demonstrate inclusive, fairly paid employment and job training.
Who may be affected: Lane County job seekers with disabilities, local food businesses and River Road customers.
