Lane County starts dissolving the River Road water district
The dormant district has seven riverbank structures, four missing annual audits and $117,000 in the bank. A public meeting comes after the financial review.
Lane County commissioners have started the formal process of dissolving the River Road Water Control District, which oversees seven erosion-control structures along the west side of the Willamette River between Eugene and Harrisburg. The vote was unanimous on Tuesday.
The district has not filed required audits for four years. Its volunteer board had already stopped functioning after members concluded they could not inspect, permit and repair the structures without imposing taxes they did not want to levy. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it last inspected the revetments in 2024 but is not responsible for their maintenance.
County staff will now examine the district's finances, including roughly $117,000 reportedly left in its account. State procedure calls for a public meeting 21 to 30 days after that financial report is finished; no meeting date is posted yet.
