The 2027–28 FAFSA is open; Lane students should use the right year's form
The new application covers school from July 2027 through June 2028, while the 2026–27 form remains active for the current aid year.
Two FAFSA years are now in play, which is a small dropdown with expensive consequences. Students seeking aid for school between July 1, 2027, and June 30, 2028, should use the 2027–28 form. The 2026–27 form is still the one for the current academic year.
Lane Community College advises filing early because some grants and work-study funds receive priority consideration. The college also points Oregon students who cannot use FAFSA — including eligible undocumented students and people with DACA or Temporary Protected Status — to the Oregon Student Aid Application. Before submitting anything, confirm the academic year at the top of the form; speed is useful only after the year is right.
Field notes
What changed: The 2027–28 federal aid application is available for the next academic year while the current-year form remains open.
Why it matters: Submitting the wrong year's form can delay aid, and early applicants may receive priority consideration for some grants and work-study opportunities.
Who may be affected: Lane County students planning college, career school or graduate school in the 2027–28 academic year and families helping them apply.
