Apply for SSI (Supplemental Security Income)

Anyone may apply for SSI, and applying is free. Apply soon, because payments can't start before your application date.

  1. Check eligibility firstNot sure? Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
  2. Call to set an appointmentIf you keep the appointment, the date you called can count as your filing date.
  3. Or start onlineSome people can apply for SSI through the online disability application.
  4. Finish within 60 daysIf you miss the appointment, you have 60 days from your call to file a signed application.
Social Security can't pay for months before your application date.
