Set up an IRS payment plan for personal tax debt

Eligible taxpayers can request additional time or monthly payments for IRS tax debt; interest and applicable penalties continue.

Steps

3 steps
  1. Choose the type of planA short-term plan allows up to 180 days to pay in full. If you need longer, check eligibility for a monthly installment agreement.
  2. Check online eligibilityFor an online monthly plan, you generally must owe $50,000 or less and have filed all required returns. An online short-term plan requires less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest.
  3. Apply through the IRSCreate or use your IRS Online Account and apply for a payment plan. Review current fees before agreeing. Direct debit requires bank routing and account numbers.
A payment plan does not stop interest or applicable penalties from accruing.
