About 400 kids lost their fall YMCA leagues
The Eugene Family YMCA canceled soccer and basketball after a staffing loss; KidSports is helping families look for alternatives.
The fall calendar vanished for roughly 400 young players before registration opened. The Eugene Family YMCA canceled its traditional soccer and basketball leagues after one of the two full-time coordinators needed to run the programs left. About 200 children had been expected in each sport.
For some Creswell families, the replacement may mean assembling a KidSports team, finding a local practice field or driving into Eugene twice a week. KidSports needs at least eight players in a grade to form a team, according to the reporting. The Y says it is working with KidSports and still plans clinics, Itty Bitty Sports, Ninja Zone, open gym and other recreation.
The YMCA says more detail about fall programming should arrive by Sept. 1. Competitive leagues could return in winter, but staffing and family demand will decide that later.
