Baxter cleanup brings odors; EPA describes its monitoring
Monday’s reporting separates cleanup odors from the measurements taken during excavation.
Excavation at the former J.H. Baxter wood-treatment site has released odors as crews uncover contaminated soil and water, Lookout reports Monday.
EPA told Lookout that measured volatile organic compounds had not exceeded its safety thresholds. The three monitoring stations operate during cleanup work, not continuously. The report also describes small particulate spikes during fog on October 7.
The removal figures have a specific cutoff: by October 11, crews had excavated 2,485 cubic yards of soil and removed 8,100 gallons of water, according to the report. EPA’s own site page distinguishes this removal work from the broader, longer-term Superfund investigation.
Field notes
What changed: A new local report explains odors, monitoring and the dated excavation totals.
Why it matters: Neighbors need the scope and limits of the measurements, not a blanket safety claim.
Who may be affected: West Eugene residents and people working near the former facility.
