Springfield payroll tax starts with January 2027 pay periods
Lookout reports a 0.1% employee share and a separate 0.1% employer share.
Springfield’s new payroll tax will apply to pay periods starting January 1, 2027, according to the city announcement described in Lookout’s Monday report. The reported rate is 0.1% each for employers and employees associated with a business location inside city limits.
The timetable does not put registration on the first day of the tax. Employer registration opens March 1, 2027, and the first quarterly return is due April 30, Lookout reports. Employers will handle both portions through quarterly returns; self-employed people and independent contractors have an annual filing cycle.
This is a general timetable, not a determination of any particular worker’s or business’s tax obligations.
Field notes
What changed: Monday’s report lays out implementation dates for the tax adopted in June.
Why it matters: Payroll preparation begins before registration opens.
