Florence beaches face sneaker waves, then high surf

NWS forecasts breakers up to 28 feet during Sunday’s advisory.

Sneaker waves are possible along Florence-area beaches this weekend, followed by hazardous surf with breakers up to 28 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

The beach hazards statement lasts until 4 a.m. Sunday, November 8; a high surf advisory then runs until 10 p.m. that day. Both cover the central Oregon coast.

NWS advises staying well back from the water, keeping children and pets away from the surf, and avoiding nearby rocks, jetties and logs. Waves can move large beach logs and sweep people into the ocean. If someone is swept away, call 911 rather than entering the water, and keep watching the person until help arrives.

Field notes

What changed: An NWS coastal message issued late November 6 confirms the weekend hazard sequence and Sunday’s high surf advisory.

Why it matters: Unexpected wave run-up can reach people standing beyond the usual waterline.

Who may be affected: Florence-area beach visitors, coastal residents, anglers and people traveling to the coast.
