Correct a filed federal tax return with Form 1040-X

Use Form 1040-X when a filed federal return needs a correction to income, filing status, deductions, credits, dependents or tax liability.

Steps

4 steps
  1. Decide whether to amendUse the IRS amendment decision tool. You do not need to amend just because IRS corrected an error or asked for missing forms.
  2. Prepare the corrected formsFile Form 1040-X with the complete corrected return for the year and supporting documents and changed forms or schedules.
  3. Choose the filing methodFollow the current IRS online or paper instructions for your return year and filing circumstances.
  4. Check payment and state effectsIf you owe more tax, follow the IRS payment instructions. A federal correction may also affect Oregon tax; contact the state tax agency and do not attach a state return to the federal amendment.
Refund claims generally must be filed within three years after the original filing or two years after payment, whichever is later. Early filings count from the April deadline; special rules can apply.
