File a complaint about a construction contractor

Property owners can ask the CCB for mediation over faulty work or a broken contract, but must meet strict deadlines and send a notice first.

Steps

5 steps
  1. Check your filing deadlineFor work on an existing structure, file within one year of completion. New structures follow different deadlines.
  2. Mail a 30-day pre-complaint noticeSend it by certified mail to the contractor address on file with the board, stating you plan to file with the CCB.
  3. Keep proof you mailed the noticeKeep a copy of the notice and the certified-mail proof; you will send both with your complaint.
  4. File the complaint formPick the form that matches who you are. The CCB then reviews whether it has jurisdiction and contacts you.
  5. Pay the $50 fee when askedThe CCB asks for the fee after it confirms jurisdiction. Mediation is then usually scheduled.

Mediation does not guarantee payment. Collecting from the contractor's bond needs a court judgment or arbitration award.
