A burning railroad trestle stopped Highway 99 and the trains
Creosote-treated timbers near Beltline sent up visible smoke Sunday morning. Crews halted rail traffic and closed highway lanes while firefighters worked.
Firefighters found Sunday morning’s smoke in a small railroad trestle across Highway 99 from Jerry’s. The creosote-treated heavy timbers burned visibly enough to draw a multi-agency response.
Union Pacific stopped trains at firefighters’ request. ODOT closed the northbound lanes and one southbound lane from about 9:30 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m. Eugene Springfield Fire and Lane Fire Authority handled the fire. The cause remained undetermined Sunday.
The lanes reopened and train traffic resumed, but the location matters: one burning structure briefly pinched both the road and rail lines through the same north Eugene corridor.
