Ten minutes, one bulb, one less reason to get pulled over
A volunteer clinic replaces headlights and brake lights for free at rotating Eugene-Springfield locations. English and Spanish help are available.
A burned-out brake light can be a tiny repair with a much larger consequence. Once a month, a group of local mechanics and car people tries to remove both.
The Free Automobile Light Repair Clinic has replaced bulbs on about 80 cars since the Neighborhood Anarchist Collective helped start it a little more than a year ago. A standard bulb swap takes about 10 minutes. If the problem runs deeper than the bulb, volunteers can at least help diagnose what should happen next.
The clinic meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at rotating locations in Eugene and Springfield. Bulbs are free, people may bring their own, and help is available in English and Spanish. The project’s stated purpose is direct: safer cars and fewer police stops that begin with a dead light.
