Tomatoes without a hose: one small farm tests a drier future
At Lilliputopia Farm near Monroe, one-third of an acre is growing without irrigation. The tomatoes have not been watered since they were planted in May.
Eliza Mason’s tomato plants are doing something that sounds wrong in an Oregon summer: making fruit without irrigation. She planted them in May at Lilliputopia, her four-acre farm near Monroe, and has not watered them since.
The farm is not pretending water does not matter. Four 3,000-gallon tanks collect rain from a greenhouse roof, while a one-third-acre plot is reserved for crops that rely on moisture left in the soil after Oregon’s wet winter. Dry farming can work with tomatoes, melons, squash, corn and beans, but the people studying it are careful not to sell it as a universal answer. Site, soil and economics still decide a lot.
Interest is no longer tiny. Oregon State University’s Dry Farming Program has 550 people on its mailing list, and 300 to 500 growers attend its annual gatherings. A Water Resilience Toolkit came out August 4, and the next field tour is August 26. The tomato is the eye-catching part. The larger story is that southern Willamette Valley farmers are testing what remains possible when the summer water math gets worse.
