One last throw, 217 feet, 9 inches
Oregon commit Simon Rosselli needed an American U20 record to win the discus. On his sixth attempt at Hayward Field, he got it.
Simon Rosselli entered his sixth and final discus throw in fifth place. A personal best would not be enough. To win, the Oregon commit needed to break an American U20 record that had stood since 2009.
He threw 66.39 meters — 217 feet, 9 inches — and none of the three athletes left behind him could answer it. His family watched from Eugene after evacuating their Spokane-area home because of wildfire.
The throw supplied the cleanest finish to five days of the World Athletics U20 Championships at Hayward Field. Team USA ended with a meet-record 24 medals. Its men’s 4-by-100 team ran a U20 world record of 38.16 seconds, and both American 4-by-400 teams won gold.
