South Lane's biggest fire this season grew to 55 acres in hours

A fire first reported at seven to 10 acres Tuesday afternoon reached 55 acres within hours in the hills south of Cottage Grove. The Harness 1310 Fire — initially called the Big Baldy Fire — was the largest fire reported in Lane County so far this season when Lookout Eugene-Springfield published its Oregon Department of Forestry-sourced update.

The fire was burning near the Lane-Douglas county line, roughly 16 miles south of Cottage Grove. The response included three bulldozers, nine engines, water tenders, a 15-person hand crew, seven helicopters and an air-attack plane. No homes were threatened in that report, and the cause remained under investigation.
