Springfield's final Illumination forum asks who belongs in America at 250
The free Wednesday discussion at Memo's Mexican Restaurant brings Springfield and east Lane County voices into a yearlong oral-history project centered on communities often left out of the record.
A community forum Wednesday evening will use the country's 250th anniversary to ask how freedom and belonging have been experienced by people whose stories are often pushed to the margins.
The Illumination Advisory Committee will host the free conversation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. September 30 at Memo's Mexican Restaurant, 737 Main St. in Springfield. Panelists include people whose experiences have been collected by Illumination, a Springfield History Museum initiative documenting American Indian and Alaska Native, Black and African American, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and Latino communities.
The Springfield gathering is the last in a series that also visited Cottage Grove, Blue River, Junction City and Florence. It is a discussion, not a ceremony with a required point of view; the practical offering is a room where local history gets spoken by more of the people who lived it.
