Nine fresh stories cleared the evidence and overlap bars. The Head Start comment deadline leads because residents can still act; health care, transportation, youth services and labor follow as full stories, while procurement, forests and two civic-event items form a compact briefing board.

Head Start's October 6 comment deadline now carries a Lane County stake
A proposed federal rewrite would give local programs more flexibility, while Lane County families and staff warn that screenings, support services and smaller classes could become harder to preserve.
Lane County's Head Start program serves 746 children in families facing poverty, homelessness, foster care or disability. Now the federal standards behind that care are up for a sweeping rewrite, and public comments are due Tuesday, October 6.
The proposed rule would replace much of the current federal framework with a shorter set of standards and give states and local programs more discretion. Federal officials say that would reduce paperwork, expand local control and free money for more enrollment slots. Local families and Head Start leaders told Lookout Eugene-Springfield that the same flexibility could leave programs choosing among staff, class sizes and services that are no longer expressly required. They pointed to developmental, vision and hearing screenings; mental-health and dental support; multilingual communication; and detailed inclusion rules for children with disabilities.
This is a proposal, not a final change. Head Start of Lane County says it wants to keep its current level of care, but flat funding could make that difficult if federal requirements and staffing support shrink.
