The Current is LaneHelp’s local news brief for Lane County. Each edition is a short set of stories with the sources listed underneath, so you can check the work.

A reviewed local brief: a handful of Lane County stories per edition, each with its receipts.

Read the latest edition#

The front page shows the lead story and a short list of the rest, along with the edition date, how many stories it holds, and how many sources it cites. Tap Read edition to open the whole thing, or tap any headline to jump straight to that story.

Some editions let you switch between Pages, which reads like a paper you flip, and Scroll view, which runs everything top to bottom. On a computer you can also Print edition. Older issues are one tap away under Past editions, and there’s an RSS link if you like your news in a feed reader.

Check the receipts#

Every story page has Footnotes: a quick TL;DR, the Receipts (links to the public pages and records the story used), when it was Last checked, and how confident the editors are. At the end of the story, Field notes spell out what changed, why it matters, and who may be affected.

Send in a story or photo#

  1. Open the community desk

    On the front page, find Submit to The Current and tap Submit story/photo. You’ll be asked to sign in first.

  2. Pick what you’re sending

    Choose Story, Photo, or Story + photo, and give it a short title. A story should cover what happened, where, and why readers should care.

  3. Add the photo details

    For a photo, add a caption and a short description for people using screen readers. Then confirm you took it or have permission to share it.

  4. Send it for review

    Tap Submit for review. Editors decide what runs. Sending one can earn a few leaderboard points, with more if it’s used, and accepted pieces are credited to your username.

Questions people ask

Is The Current a live news feed?
No. It comes out in editions, and each one is a snapshot. For conditions that change by the hour, use Alerts or Fire & Police calls.
Where do the facts come from?
Open any story and find its Footnotes. The Receipts link to the public pages and records the story used.
Can I read older editions?
Yes. Pick a date from Past editions on the front page.
Do I need an account to read it?
No. You only need to sign in to submit a story or photo.
