Using the map

The map shows services, shelters, buses, and alerts by place. Learn the basic controls in two minutes.

Open the map

What this does

The map puts everything LaneHelp knows onto one map of Lane County, organized into layers you can turn on and off.

When to use it

Use it when place matters: what is near me, how far is that shelter, which bus gets me there, is anything happening on the way.

What you need

Nothing. Allowing location makes “near me” automatic, but you can always type a place instead — see Location permissions.

A practice map. Toggle layers, tap pins, and select the bus route — it works like the real one, with demo data.

The basics

  1. Pick what the map shows

The layer buttons (left side on computers, a slide-up panel on phones) choose the map’s job: Resources, Shelter, Transit, Rentals, Events, Response, or Fire. See Map layers explained.

  2. Tap a pin for details

Single pins are one place. A numbered circle is a cluster — several places close together; zoom in or tap it to split them apart.

  3. Act from the pin card

The card that opens has Call, Directions, and a link to the full listing. Directions starts a trip — see Building a trip.

  4. Search by place

The map search centers on an address, cross street, or landmark, so you can look around somewhere you are not.

Sharing a map view

The map address bar link preserves what you are looking at — layers, place, and route. Copy it to show someone exactly what you see.

Common questions

Does the map show where I am to anyone else?

No. Your location is used on your device to center the map and sort results, and is not published or stored as a history. See Privacy and safety.

Does a pin mean the service is open?

No — a pin is a place, not a status. Open the pin card and check the hours, and call when it matters.

The map feels slow on my phone.

Turn off layers you are not using — each active layer adds data. On very slow connections, the directory list view shows the same services without the map.
