Prairie Road closed for railroad crossing replacement starting Monday
Pacific Excavation and railroad crews will rebuild the highway intersection approach and replace tracks, closing Prairie Road between Highway 99 and Maxwell Road for the week of October 5.
Pacific Excavation construction crews and railroad contractors are set to begin replacing the railroad crossing on Prairie Road at Highway 99 starting Monday, October 5, 2026. The work will reconstruct the eastern portion of the intersection leading up to the crossing, necessitating a full closure of Prairie Road to all traffic between Highway 99 and Maxwell Road for the entire week.
City of Eugene project managers state that the intent is to reopen Prairie Road and the new railroad crossing early the following week, though schedule adjustments of up to an additional week may occur depending on testing of the traffic signal controller at Highway 99. Drivers and freight traffic should use designated detour routes along Irving Road, Beltline Highway, or Chambers Road.
When finished, the federally and state-funded project will deliver new sidewalks, improved pedestrian access ramps, and upgraded railroad crossing safety hardware. Pedestrians encountering detours are urged to follow posted signs, and cyclists near active heavy equipment are advised to verify visibility with operators before passing.
Spencer Butte trailhead adds new paved parking lot on South Willamette Street
The City of Eugene is completing a formalized 52nd Avenue parking facility and pedestrian beacon system to alleviate roadside congestion near the southern park entrance.
Hikers accessing Spencer Butte Park from the south will soon find a safer, formalized parking area as the City of Eugene nears completion of its Willamette Street and West 52nd Avenue parking lot project.
The newly paved lot, situated just south of 52nd Avenue across from the southern park approach, replaces years of informal and congested roadside shoulder parking along Willamette Street. In addition to asphalt paving and designated vehicle stalls, the project installs rapid-flashing pedestrian crosswalk beacons across South Willamette Street, providing clear crossing sightlines for trail visitors.
Finishing touches including striping and final landscape restoration are wrapping up this week. Visitors are reminded to use marked crossings and exercise caution when approaching active crews during final staging.
