Community

Community is where Lane County neighbors post short notes, watch directory work happen, and find each other. This page also covers messages, following, blocking, and reporting.

What it does
A shared board of neighbor notes, directory activity, and shared camera moments, plus a list of members with public profiles.
Good for
Sharing something useful with the county, or seeing who has been fixing listings lately.
You’ll need
Nothing to read. An account to post, vote, follow, or send messages.

Read the board#

Everything lands in one stream, newest first. Narrow it with Everything, Notes, Directory work, Camera, or Issue checks. Tap a name to open that person’s public profile, if they have one.

Notes are neighbor context. They never change a directory listing, because listings only change through review. A note saying a pantry moved is a heads-up, not an update. To fix the listing itself, see Fix a listing.

Post a note#

Sign in, write in the box under What’s happening around Lane County?, and tap Post note. Notes top out at 320 characters, and you can post one per hour. Brevity is a feature.

Under each note, the up and down arrows mark it Helpful note or Not helpful. Report flags it with a reason: spam, harassment, inaccurate, or in the wrong place. A moderator takes it from there.

Find neighbors and organizations#

The Neighbors panel lists members whose public profiles are listed in Community. Search it by username or role. Signed in, you’ll see a Visibility link there that jumps to the setting for hiding yourself. For local agencies and nonprofits, browse organization pages.

Messages#

Open someone’s profile and tap Message to start a conversation, or open Messages for your inbox. The Message button only appears when that person accepts messages from you. Each member chooses who can reach them under Who can message you in account settings: Everyone on LaneHelp, Members with established accounts (at least a week old), People in my organizations, or Nobody.

Inside a conversation, the options menu has Mute notifications, Hide conversation, Report conversation, and Block member.

Follow, block, and report#

  • Follow: tap Follow on a public profile to keep up with someone. Signed out, the button says Sign in to follow.
  • Block: on their profile, open More and choose Block member. Blocking ends messaging both ways and stops them from following you.
  • Report: use Report profile under More, Report under a note, or Report conversation in Messages. Pick a reason, and a moderator reviews it.

Questions people ask

Do I need an account to read Community?
No. You need one to post, vote, react, follow, or send messages.
Why can’t I message someone?
They may limit who can message them, or one of you has blocked the other. LaneHelp doesn’t say which.
Does a note change a listing?
No. Notes add context. Listings change only through review.
How do I hide from the Neighbors panel?
Turn off List my username in the Community neighbors panel in account settings, then tap Save settings. Your public profile covers the rest of your privacy choices.
